Dear parents,

I am very excited to be teaching your child in grade 7 this year. In order for me to meet the needs of each child, I will be spending time in class observing and getting to know the children individually. I am also sending home a questionnaire for you to complete in order to help me better understand and plan for the interests and needs of your child.

I look forward to seeing you at the Open House on Tuesday, Sept. 15th, 2015. Staff presentations and general information will be provided in the gathering area at 7:00 p.m. preceded by a visit to our classroom. In-depth information on programming, students’ work, routines and behavioral expectations will be given and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. I look forward to seeing you then. If you are unable to attend the open house on September 14th, I will send home any information with your child. Please feel free to contact me at any time prior to or following the open house. In the meantime, please take the time to read the following pages, which provide important information regarding the year ahead.

AGENDA

- This year, each student will receive an agenda and will learn to integrate its use into their daily lives. PLEASE check your child's agenda for daily for homework, spelling words, important events, etc.

- We will begin the “Partners in Reading Program” with monthly rewards. Students will keep their reading record sheet in their agenda/folder.

- Any other notes will be sent with your child in his/her folder. PLEASE check your child`s folder and agenda every day for important notes.

HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS

- Children are asked to read for a minimum of 15 minutes every day.

I recommend they read at least three days per week in French.

- Other then daily math, homework will not be assigned unless your child did not complete his/her work in class. I will ensure that your child is only assigned what he/she is capable of completing independently. Incomplete work will only be sent home if your child does not make effective use of his/her time in class.

DISCIPLINE

- As a “Safe and Caring” School, students are encouraged to develop and practice good problem solving skills for conflict resolution. They are encouraged to show respect for themselves and others and take responsibility for their own actions. We have adopted a non-violence policy for our class. This means that students will not be allowed to depict violence in their artwork, writing or discussions. We wish to promote a positive learning environment.

- In class, I give a lot of positive reinforcement through programs such as: responsibility chart, beluga chart, marble jar, certificates, rewards for the reading program, positive notes sent to the parents, and verbal praise.

- Should a student disobey a rule, he/she gets a reminder. Students are informed the first week of school regarding the expectations and the consequences applied. It usually means taking a few minutes to reflect on their behavior and to come up with a solution on paper. The length of time taken will vary depending on how often they get reminders. If a student’s behavior is disruptive to others, he or she may be asked to have a “time out” for reflection. Minor problems are dealt with at school. You will be informed of recurring problems or more serious conflicts, and we would then discuss special arrangements.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

- Please ensure that your child has both indoor and outdoor shoes. For safety reasons and in order to protect the gym floor, students must have a pair of non marking RUNNING SHOES for gym.

- Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns as they arise.

Your input and feedback are important to me and I look forward to getting to know you and your child.

I hope to meet with you on the 15th !

Yours truly,

 Karen Girouard
